The left and right margins of a STAM item should be fully-justified, with the edges of every line of text aligned with the text above and below it (provided there is no parsha break at the end or beginning of the line). If three or more lines are noticeably “stair-stepped” into or out of the boundary of the rest of the text, it is called a “kuba” (tent) or “zanav” (tail) – depending on whether the the bottom or top is narrower. In either case, the STAM item is invalid. If letters (or even whole words) stick out past the right or left margins, it is still acceptable (at least bidi’eved), provided the text does not extend so far that it looks like it is part of the previous or next column.
